Ballot questions

These appear below the candidates and have to be marked separately. Three are on every Lehigh County ballot; the rest depend on where you live.

Lehigh County

On every ballot in Lehigh County.

Restructuring the Election Commission County Question 1

Shall the Lehigh County Home Rule Charter be amended to expand the membership of the Election and Registration Commission from 3 voting members to 5 voting members, consisting of 2 members from each of the 2 largest political affiliations in the County and 1 member from the third largest political affiliation in the County, and to revise the appointment process to provide residents with the opportunity to apply for membership on the Commission?

YESNO

There are pros and cons here, we like the idea of giving independent voters a seat at the table. But this change would remove the County Executive from the board that runs our elections, and the Executive is the only member voters elect directly. We think the people overseeing our elections should include someone who answers to voters at the ballot box.

Public notices in one newspaper, not two County Question 2

Shall multiple sections of the Lehigh County Home Rule Charter be amended to allow the County to publish notices in at least one newspaper of general circulation instead of the currently required two newspapers?

YESNO

The Lehigh Valley no longer has two general-circulation newspapers. This updates the charter to match reality.

Retirement Board seat County Question 3

Shall Section 606 of the Lehigh County Home Rule Charter be amended to eliminate the requirement that the Chair of the Board of Commissioners serve on the Lehigh County Retirement Board, and replace the Chair with another member of the Board of Commissioners?

YESNO

The Chair of the Board of Commissioners currently serves on the Retirement Board by default. This lets another commissioner take that seat instead. A simple governance fix.

Local questions

Only on the ballot if you live in the municipality listed.

Paid sick leave City of Allentown

Do you favor amending the City of Allentown Public Health Code by adding a new chapter titled “Paid Sick Leave Act?” Such an addition would require businesses to provide paid sick time to employees.

YESNO

Workers at most private businesses in Allentown would earn one hour of paid sick time for every 40 hours worked. Pittsburgh has a similar law that was challenged in court and upheld. Everyone deserves access to paid sick leave.

Remote participation for council Hanover Township

Shall Section 3.10 of the Hanover Township Home Rule Charter be amended to allow Council Members to participate remotely in meetings and count toward a quorum and vote?

YESNO

Council members could join meetings remotely and still count toward a quorum and vote. A straightforward reform for elected officials who can't make every meeting in person.

Open space preservation North Whitehall Township

Do you favor North Whitehall Township imposing an additional earned income tax at the rate of 0.15% in order to fund the purchase of land to preserve open space?

YESNO

A small tax, about $15 for every $10,000 earned, lets the township buy land and keep it green or turn it into parks. Open space funding is one of the best tools communities have against overdevelopment, including the spread of data centers.

A qualified Finance Director Whitehall Township

Do you favor Whitehall Township removing the current Office of the Treasurer and replacing it with an Office of Finance Director, who would be appointed by the mayor and will have the expanded duties of both Treasurers and Tax Collectors?

YESNO

The Treasurer is currently an elected office with no requirement that the person have any financial background. An appointed Finance Director, handling both treasurer and tax collector duties, means the township's money is managed professionally.

Why it matters

A pro-democracy majority in Harrisburg

The governor can't pass laws alone.

  • The Republican-led State Senate blocks a higher minimum wage, housing and healthcare reforms, and transit funding.
  • A razor-thin House majority makes it hard to protect clean air and water, public schools, medical autonomy, and the right to vote.
  • In the Lehigh Valley we can re-elect 2 senators and 5 representatives, and flip 1 Senate seat and 5 House seats.

A new voice in Congress: Bob Brooks

Our current congressman voted to cut Medicaid, fund ICE, and restrict labor protections.

  • Protect vote-by-mail and fight voter suppression.
  • Restore due process and end inhumane treatment of detainees.
  • Protect Medicaid, Medicare, and CHIP, and restore health insurance tax credits.
  • Investigate self-dealing at every level of government.
